Pune’s summer does not affect all breeds equally. Factors like coat type, skull shape, body size, activity level, and origin of breed play a major role in how dogs and cats tolerate heat. Many pet parents unknowingly treat all pets similarly during summer, which can lead to dehydration, skin problems, breathing stress, and even heatstroke.

In Pune city, certain breeds are especially common, and each requires slightly different summer management.

Common Dog Breeds in Pune & Their Summer Needs

  • Labrador Retriever

Labradors are among Pune’s most common family dogs. Originally bred for colder climates and water work, they struggle in intense Indian summers. Their thick double coat traps heat, and because Labradors are highly food-motivated, summer inactivity can quickly lead to weight gain.

During summer:

  • Walk them only during early mornings or late evenings.

  • Avoid overfeeding heavy kibble and oily treats.

  • Provide frequent hydration.

  • Swimming is excellent exercise if hygienic facilities are available.

A common mistake is shaving Labradors completely. Their double coat actually helps regulate temperature. Instead, regular brushing to remove excess undercoat is safer.

  • Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers face similar issues as Labradors but are even more prone to overheating because of their longer coat. Pune’s dry heat may also lead to skin irritation and fungal infections if grooming is neglected.

Their summer care includes:

  • Regular grooming and de-shedding.

  • Keeping ears dry and clean.

  • Using cooling mats and shaded resting spaces.

  • Avoiding long car rides without ventilation.

Golden Retrievers are emotionally sensitive dogs and may become lethargic or irritable during extreme heat. Reduced activity should not always be mistaken for laziness.

  • Beagle

Beagles are energetic and curious dogs commonly seen in Pune apartments. Though their short coat helps with heat tolerance, their high activity level can cause exhaustion quickly.

Key summer care for this breed:

  • Short but mentally stimulating walks.

  • Avoid excessive running in parks during daytime.

  • Watch for dehydration after play sessions.

  • Include hydrating foods like cucumber or pumpkin in moderation.

Because Beagles tend to overeat, summer weight management is important when physical activity naturally decreases.

  • Shih Tzu

Shih Tzus are one of the breeds most affected by Pune summers. Their flat face (brachycephalic structure) makes breathing difficult in heat and humidity. Their dense coat further worsens heat retention.

Critical summer precautions:

  • Strictly avoid afternoon walks.

  • Maintain trimmed coat length (avoid complete shaving).

  • Keep them in well-ventilated or air-conditioned spaces.

  • Never allow overheating during grooming or travel.

These dogs can develop breathing distress faster than other breeds. Loud panting, tongue darkening, or excessive drooling should be treated seriously.

  • Indie Dogs (Indian Pariah Dogs)

Indies are naturally adapted to Indian climates and generally tolerate Pune summers better than foreign breeds. Their short coat, lean build, and natural resilience make them excellent heat survivors.

However, even Indies require:

  • Clean drinking water access.

  • Tick and flea protection during summer.

  • Shade during peak afternoon heat.

  • Proper nutrition despite reduced appetite.

Street Indies particularly suffer from dehydration, hot roads, and lack of water bowls. Community water stations can significantly help them during peak summer months.

Common Cat Breeds in Pune & Their Summer Needs

  • Persian Cats

Persians are extremely vulnerable during Indian summers. Their thick long fur and flat face create dual difficulty in breathing and cooling.

Important care measures:

  • Air-conditioned or cool indoor environments.

  • Frequent grooming to avoid matting.

  • Wet food to improve hydration.

  • Strict monitoring for breathing difficulty.

Persians can silently suffer from heat stress, so pet parents should watch for open-mouth breathing and unusual inactivity.

  • Indian Cats (Desi Cats)

Indian domestic cats are naturally adapted to local weather conditions. They regulate heat better and often instinctively seek cool areas.

Yet, they require:

  • Multiple water bowls.

  • Wet food or hydration support.

  • Clean litter boxes (odor increases rapidly in heat).

Many Indian cats reduce food intake in summer, which is often normal unless accompanied by weakness or vomiting.

  • Siamese Cats

Siamese cats have shorter coats and generally manage heat better than Persians. However, they are highly active and social, making dehydration possible if they play excessively.

Summer support includes:

  • Interactive indoor play during cooler hours.

  • Fresh water in multiple locations.

  • Avoiding direct balcony sunlight exposure.

Because Siamese cats are vocal and expressive, behavioral changes are often easier to notice early.

  • Maine Coon

Though less common, Maine Coons are increasingly seen in urban Pune homes. Their heavy fur coat makes Pune summers difficult for them.

Necessary precautions:

  • Regular grooming.

  • Cool flooring access.

  • Avoiding enclosed non-ventilated rooms.

  • Monitoring appetite and energy levels.

These cats need much more cooling support than Indian breeds.

  • British Shorthairs

British Shorthairs tolerate heat moderately but are prone to obesity and low activity. Pune summers can worsen lethargy and reduce water intake.

Helpful measures:

  • Controlled feeding.

  • Wet food supplementation.

  • Gentle play sessions during cooler hours.

Because they appear calm naturally, subtle signs of heat stress may go unnoticed.

Ultimately, summer care is not just about cooling pets - it is about understanding each breed’s biological relationship with heat. Indian breeds often possess natural adaptation, while imported breeds may require careful environmental support. Responsible pet parenting in Pune’s summers therefore means moving beyond generic advice and learning breed-sensitive care practices.
